Week 3 News And Notes

Poillon Rolling: Peet Poillon had another great game for Chesapeake, scoring seven more points on three goals (one two-point goal) and three assists. Poillon now leads the MLL in points with 14 in two games. He is tied for first in both goals (8) and assists (5).

Offensive Outburst: Chesapeake exploded for 25 goals against Toronto on Saturday. Like Poillon, Kyle Dixon scored seven points in the game. Chesapeake also had three players (Brian Vetter, Danny Glading, and Ben Hunt) score four points in the blowout win. The Bayhawks are now 2-0 and have scored a league-leading 35 goals.

Not Setting the Tone: One of the reasons for Toronto's big loss was their inability to win faceoffs. The Nationals were only 5-39 (.128 percent) on faceoffs, though the fact that they were up against Alex Smith probably had something to do with it. Smith won the other 34 faceoffs (.872 percent) in the win, and was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Rabil Debuts: After missing Boston's first game, Paul Rabil returned Saturday and scored three goals for the Cannons in helping them to a 17-15 win over Chicago. Boston is now 2-0 for the first time since 2005.

A Step Back: Chicago goaltender Mike Gabel, who performed well in the second half of last week's win against Toronto, played the entire game for the Machine on Saturday. Unfortunately for Gabel, he only stopped nine out of 25 shots (.380 percent) and his team lost to Boston.

Seibald Shines: Max Seibald's performance against Long Island earned him Offensive Player of the Week honors. He had six points (three goals and three assists) to lead Denver to their first victory of the season. In fact, he accounted for one third of all Outlaws points in the game.

Pass It Around: Long Island is off to a very slow start offensively this season, and part of the reason could be a lack of assists. In Saturday's loss at Denver, six of the Lizards' 10 goals were unassisted. Also, the Lizards only have three players with three or more goals at this point. By comparison, their next opponent Boston has seven.

Dixon From Downtown: Chesapeake's Kyle Dixon already has three two-point goals this season, vaulting him into the top five all-time. He has 20 for his career, and trails leader Roy Colsey by 13. It is conceivable that Dixon could end up in second place by the end of the season. He needs six more two-pointers to reach that spot.

Solid Midfield: The Cannons made a point in the offseason to upgrade their midfield, and it has paid dividends to this point in the season. The group has scored 20 of the team's 31 total goals on the season, led by Kevin Buchanan and Justin Smith who have four goals each. Their depth has allowed Matt Poskay to move to attack, and so far he has thrived in his new position scoring eight goals in two games.

Garrity Getting It Done: Perhaps lost in all of the offensive fireworks provided by Chesapeake is the play of goaltender Chris Garrity. Through two games, he has the best goals against average (9.18) and save percentage (.595) in the MLL. He is the league's only goaltender with a goals against average below 10.

Offensive Defender: Toronto's Brodie Merrill has two goals and an assist, and is the only Nationals defender to record a point in two games this season. Merrill is currently tied for fourth on the team in goals, which is a testament to the struggles of the Nationals in the early stages of the season.

MLL Draft Approaches: The 2010 MLL Draft is fast approaching, and will take place on June 6th at Yale University. The draft will be broadcast live at 7 pm on Universal Sports. The Machine are the current holders of the top pick, and Boston and Chesapeake are tied for the most picks with nine each.
