Press Release: Walters Totals Four Points as Chesapeake Falls to Rochester

Annapolis, MD - Midfielder Joe Walters totaled four points on two goals and two assists, but the Chesapeake Bayhawks could not overcome two scoreless quarters in suffering a 10-7 loss to the Rochester Rattlers at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

Attackman Drew Westervelt scored three goals for Chesapeake, which was shutout in both the second and fourth quarters. Midfielder Matt Mackrides contributed two assists for the Bayhawks, who managed just one goal on a mere eight shots in the first half.

“We’re just not very good. We’re not playing very well. It’s a reflection on me. I’ve got to do a better job,” Chesapeake Head Coach Dave Cottle said. “Our fans deserve better, our owner deserves better and our players deserve better. It’s awful and it’s got to get fixed.”

Goalkeeper Tyler Fiorito made 12 saves while face-off specialist Stephen Robarge captured 10 of 21 draws for Chesapeake.

Attackman Mark Cockerton scored five goals to lead Rochester (8-3), which temporarily took over sole possession of first place in Major League Lacrosse. Goalkeeper John Galloway made 14 saves as the Bayhawks were held to single digits for the fifth time this season.

Chesapeake struck first just 47 seconds into the game as Walters threaded the needle on a beautiful cross-crease pass to Westervelt, who took two steps upfield to get a clear shooting lane and fired a rocket into the top corner. It was all Rochester the rest of the first quarter with Cockerton netting a hat trick – scoring on a power play, off a fast break and on a shot from right on the doorstep.

It turned into a serious defensive struggle in the second quarter and the Bayhawks were held scoreless. Cockerton struck again with an unassisted goal to make it 4-1 at halftime.

“The first half was just brutal. An MLL game with 17 shots by both teams in a half?” Cottle said. “The quality of play in the first half wasn’t very good. That’s what you get when you have two weeks off and both teams are missing seven or eight starters.”

Chesapeake’s offense came to life in the third quarter, thanks largely to the work of Walters. The left-hander got things started by coming off a pick and unleashing a hard overhand crank shot from just inside the 2-point arc. He scored again just over two minutes later on another overhand rocket.

Westervelt added two goals, one off a beautiful feed to the crease by Walters, as the Bayhawks outscored the Rattlers 6-3 to forge a 7-7 tie going into the final frame. Mackrides had two assists to help fuel the comeback.

“We didn’t change anything. We just threw and caught the ball. To the players’ credit, they said it was not X’s and O’s, that they just needed to do a better job of executing and they did in the third quarter,” Cottle said.

However, the offense disappeared again in the fourth quarter as the Bayhawks were outscored 3-0. Rookie attackman Ty Thompson scored his first career goal and the eventual game-winner off a cross-crease feed from Steven Boyle then later added an insurance tally.

“I give a lot of credit to the Rochester defense and John Galloway a lot of credit. They played great and really shut us down,” Chesapeake attackman Ben Rubeor said.
