Bayhawks Donate $7,000 to Avon Foundation

6/25/10 12:00 AM

Proceeds from Auction of Helmets Worn on Ladies Night go to Cancer Research

Pink was the predominant color Thursday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium as the Chesapeake Bayhawks celebrated Ladies’ Night and showed support for breast cancer as a charitable cause.

Bayhawks players wore pink t-shirts under their uniforms and commemorative pink helmets during their game against the Toronto Nationals. At halftime, team president Brendan Kelly made a contribution to a cause that is very meaningful to him and the entire Chesapeake Bayhawks family when he donated $7,000 to the Avon Foundation.

Founded in 1955, the Avon Foundation is the world’s largest corporate philanthropy dedicated to women’s causes and a global leader in the area of breast cancer research. Since launching its Avon Breast Cancer Crusade in 1992, Avon has raised and donated more than $640 million to breast cancer programs around the world, supporting cutting-edge research to find a cure for or prevent breast cancer as well as programs that enable all patients to access quality care.

Funding supports awareness and education: screening and diagnosis; access to treatment; support services; and scientific research. Beneficiaries of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade range from leading cancer research and clinical centers to community-based, non-profit breast health education programs. Avon Crusade programs raise funds and awareness for such programs as the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Series, the Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer, and Pink Ribbon Fundraising Products.

A large crowd attended Thursday’s Ladies’ Night event to show their support for both the Bayhawks and breast cancer outreach. The special pink helmets the Bayhawks wore for just the Toronto game will be auctioned with proceeds also benefitting breast cancer programs. Fans wishing to bid on one of the commemorative helmets can do so online at www.thebayhawks.com.

“I thought the support of the local community was outstanding last night,” Kelly said. “We are proud to be part of such a great cause. We have created a lot of excitement with the helmet auction and look forward to building on the success for next year.”

Towne Park, which provides hospitality staffing services and parking solutions to hotels, casinos, hospitals and other enterprises nationwide, served as title sponsor of Ladies' Night at the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Baltimore resident Bob Smith, a loyal Bayhawks sponsor, also supported the event.
