LONGEST TENURED BAYHAWK TAKES HEAD COACH JOB AT TOWSON
ANNAPOLIS, MD –Defenseman Shawn Nadelen has announced his official retirement from Major League Lacrosse (MLL) today, June 2nd, 2011. Nadelen has accepted the head coaching job at Towson University for the Men’s Lacrosse Team, where he has been the assistant coach for the past seven years.
“The time was coming for me to retire,” Nadelen said. “I actually considered it after last season, but got the itch again in the spring. I have this great new opportunity to take advantage of. I know it’s time for me to move on and I am very happy about it.”
“Shawn Nadelen has been a very important part of the Bayhawks franchise, not only from a talent perspective, but from a character standpoint also,” head coach Brendan Kelly said. “His presence will be missed on and off the field, and we as an organization wish him nothing but the best at Towson.”
Nadelen had an 11 year stint with the Bayhawks and has been the only player to have played in all 11 years of the team’s existence. His career with the Bayhawks began when he was drafted in the inaugural MLL Collegiate Draft in the 3rd round as the 15th pick overall.
“It has been a privilege to play for the Bayhawks for their entire existence,” Nadelen remarked. “I never thought it was possible to be part of this great franchise for such a long time.”
Nadelen’s career with the Bayhawks included all three Championship Titles (’02, ’05, ’10) and with 95 games played, he holds the franchise record for the team. Nadelen also holds second place in Bayhawks franchise records with 207 ground balls tallied during his career in the MLL. He was a two-time MLL All Star as well as a member of the gold medal winning Team USA in 2010.
“Over the years, the growth the league has undergone has been incredible,” Nadelen added. “Starting off in year one and being the young guy playing with a great group of veterans, and then going and retiring as the longest tenured Bayhawk is so rewarding. The Bayhawks have always been highly regarded in the MLL and people like Brendan Kelly and Dave Cottle will help the league to grow that much more. I am excited to see the changes as the league continues to progress and I am proud to hang my hat on my MLL career with the Bayhawks.”
The Bayhawks continue their stint on the road and travel to Boston this weekend to take on the Cannons without the help on defense from Nadelen. The game can be viewed LIVE on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic at 7:00pm. Chesapeake returns home on June 25th to battle the Cannons again at 7:00pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
