HUNT TOTALS NINE AS CHESAPEAKE RALLIES TO BEAT DENVER

KEMP MAKES 13 SAVES IN DEBUT AS BAYHAWKS BEAT OUTLAWS, 16-15 IN OVERTIME

DENVER, CO –Midfielder Ben Hunt scored off an assist from Steven Brooks with 1:07 elapsed in overtime to give the Chesapeake Bayhawks a thrilling 16-15 come-from-behind victory over the Denver Outlaws last night at Invesco Field.

Hunt had a huge game, scoring five goals – one of which was a 2-pointer – and dishing off three assists to total a career-high nine points which earned him the Bud Light Most Valuable Player of the Game.

“This was an unbelievable victory. We showed a lot of heart and clawed our way back from a big deficit,” Hunt said. “We never quit in this game and that tells a lot about the competitive spirit of this team.”

Attackman Danny Glading totaled four points on three goals and an assist for Chesapeake (3-1), which handed Denver (3-1) its first loss and moved both teams into a tie for first place in Major League Lacrosse (MLL).

Goalkeeper Joey Kemp was superb in his debut for the Bayhawks, playing the entire game and making 13 saves. Attackman Ryan Hurley also came up big in his debut for Chesapeake with three goals.

Attackman Ben Rubeor along with midfielders Matt Abbott and Jeff Reynolds chipped in two points apiece for Chesapeake, which trailed by four goals after three quarters. Hunt was the catalyst as the Bayhawks mounted a furious rally in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Outlaws 6-2 to forge a 15-15 tie and force overtime.

Hunt fired in a 2-point goal to pull the visiting Bayhawks within one with just 1:09 remaining in regulation and then assisted Glading on the tying goal with just four seconds to go. Long stick defensive midfielder Barney Ehrmann, a rookie out of Georgetown, stripped Seibald of the ball with 30 seconds left to set up the game-tying goal.

“I am so proud of this team right now. We played a very good team on the road, fell behind and didn’t panic,” Chesapeake head coach Brendan Kelly said. “We stuck together as a team and kept battling. We made the plays down the stretch when we needed to and this is just a great win for the Bayhawks.”

Alex Smithwon the faceoff to start overtime and the Bayhawks were able to settle the ball. Brooks dodged to the middle of the field, drew a double-team and dished to Hunt for a crank shot past Outlaws goalie Jesse Schwartzman.

“My defender had to help on Steven and that allowed me to get my hands free with time and space for a low-to-high shot on Schwartzman,” Hunt said.

Abbott had a goal and an assist as Chesapeake jumped out to a 3-0 lead. However, attackman Brendan Mundorf had two goals and an assist as Denver outscored the visitors 8-2 in the second quarter to take an 8-6 lead at halftime.

Hunt had a goal and an assist during a 3-0 run in the third period as Chesapeake closed the gap to 11-9. Denver responded with midfielders Bill McGlone and Max Seibald who scored less than two minutes apart to rebuild the lead to 13-9 going into the final quarter.

Hurley, a first-year professional out of Cornell, scored back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback.

“We had a bunch of young guys with minimal experience step up tonight. Hurley really gave us a spark on offense while I thought Kemp was just outstanding in the goal,” Kelly said. “I asked Ehrmann to get us the ball back at the end and he took it away from Seibald, who is one of the top midfielders in the league.”

Midfielder Peet Poillon, who was an MLL All-Star last season while playing with the Bayhawks, scored four goals and assisted another to lead Denver. Attackman Drew Westervelt had two goals and an assist while Schwartzman made 18 saves.

I think this type of win is a season-changer,” Hunt said. “The entire team really came together and just refused to lose tonight. I really think we can build some momentum off this.”
