Meet Your Own Chesapeake Bayhawk All-Stars

ANNAPOLIS, MD.— Ten Bayhawk players were selected to represent the Chesapeake region in the 11th Annual MLL All-Star game this Saturday, July 9, at Harvard Stadium in Boston. These players were selected based on their exceptional performance throughout the season thus far. The Bayhawks have the most players on the all-star roster out of any other team in the league, followed by the Boston Cannons with nine.

Bayhawks attackman Danny Glading has been a defense’s worst nightmare, racking up 13 goals and nine assists on the season. Glading is ranked sixth overall in the league in total points, registering 22 in just seven games. Glading accredits his offense for the success he has experienced since the beginning of the season.

“So far this season with the way our offense has been playing, I’ve been fortunate to be on the finishing end of some plays which is why I’ve managed to be pretty productive so far,” Glading said. “We’ve had great offensive plays at the right time.”

The Bayhawks will add depth to the all-star midfield with the addition of five players. Ben Hunt, a Severna Park native, has led all Bayhawk midfielders with 13 goals, two of which were two-point goals, and three assists. Hunt was named MLL Offensive Player of the Week in week four against the Denver Outlaws. He scored five goals—one of which was a 2-pointer—and recorded three assists, notching him a career-high nine points.

“Our team winning throughout the season has allowed players to gain league recognition, which has helped them get selected” Hunt said. “Being named MLL Offensive Player of the Week can guarantee a player respect throughout the league.”

Kyle Dixon, a former University of Virginia standout, has tallied 91 goals, 28 two-pointers, and 50 assists since joining the Bayhawks in 2006. The 6’4 midfielder out of Archbishop Spalding High School has notched four goals and six assists on the season. Dixon's experience and athleticism in the midfield will be difficult for opposing players to match.

Midfielder Matt Abbott, a USILA 1st Team All-American and Tewaarton finalist at Syracuse, will look to stir things up in the midfield for the Bayhawks. Since being drafted in 2009, Abbott has registered 15 goals, 12 assists, and 99 groundballs. His success with the Bayhawks after his first season landed him on the 2009 U.S. Men’s Training Team.

Michael Kimmel, a midfielder reigning from Johns Hopkins, is in his second season with the Bayhawks after graduating in 2010. At Johns Hopkins, Kimmel became only the third midfielder in school history to net 30 points in each of his four seasons. Kimmel has had an immediate impact on the Bayhawks’ midfield, where he has recorded 16 goals, 11 assists, and 13 groundballs throughout his professional career.

Alex Smith, the Bayhawks’ face-off specialist, received All-Star honors but will not be playing in Saturday’s game due to an injury. At the University of Delaware, Smith won 1027 of 1487 face-off attempts, giving him an outstanding .811 winning percentage. In just two and a half seasons with the Bayhawks, Smith has won 511 total face-offs. In 2009, he led the MLL in face-off wins and face-off win percentage and was selected to the U.S. Men’s Training Team.

On the defensive end, long pole Kyle Hartzell will look to contain the world’s most dangerous attackers. Hartzell has recorded 61 groundballs since joining the Bayhawks in 2009 and leads all Bayhawk defenders in points and groundballs. Hartzell’s impressive technique and aggressive play make him a force to be reckoned with. He is looking forward to playing against the best of the best.

“This weekend’s game is going to feature great competition, with the best players from all around the league,” Hartzell admitted. “It’s exciting because you get to play alongside with players that we usually see and play against every weekend.”

Michael Evans, a former Johns Hopkins 1st Team USILA All-American, will also be joining Hartzell on the defensive unit. Evans started in 49 straight games for the Blue Jays, winning a National Championship in 2007. Evans was drafted by the Bayhawks in 2009 and has recorded 11 groundballs. Evans’ professional success has provided him with exceptional stick skills and field sense, making him a prime candidate in covering the opposing team’s top scorer.

In the cage, the Bayhawks goalie Brian Phipps will attempt to shutdown some of the most powerful shots in the world with the help of his defense. Phipps, a Lowe’s Senior Class Award finalist from the University of Maryland, tallied 446 total saves in his career at Maryland. After stepping in for the injured Chris Garrity, Phipps has been a stonewall for the Bayhawks, boosting a save percentage of .559. He was also named MLL Defensive Player of the week in week 7 against the Rochester Rattlers, stopping 21 saves in just 60 minutes.

“Playing at such a high level in college has allowed me to elevate my skills,” Phipps said. “My style of play has ultimately become more interesting as I am exposed to very talented players.”

MLL veteran goalie Chris Garrity received All-Star recognition despite suffering an injury in the third game of the season. In his 9th year in the league, Garrity has recorded 1,273 saves with a save percentage of .547. His level of experience and remarkable agility make him one of the most legendary and respected goalies in the sport of lacrosse.

The All-Star game will be aired live at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN2. The two teams will be selected the night before the game by the two winners of the MLL Ultimate Fan Fantasy Contest. The event will also feature the new Goalie Gauntlet as well has the traditional Bud Light Skills Competition.
