Bayhawks Team Up With The Parole Rotary Club

Annapolis, MD – TheChesapeake Bayhawks have partnered with the Parole Rotary Club to host the first annual Naptown barBAYq on May 13 th and 14 th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The event will kick-off the 2011 Home Opener and proceeds will benefit the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center for Pediatric Oncology. Money will be raised through food and beverage purchases within the barBAYq and through Home Opener ticket sales using the member code BHJHUPO11. 

“I have always been a huge proponent of giving back to the community,” owner and head coach Brendan Kelly said. “The partnership with the Parole Rotary Club to benefit pediatric cancer research is beneficial for all, and we are excited to make this event an annual event for the city of Annapolis.”

The weekend schedule includes many exciting aspects. Players will sign autographs, and the Hawkettes will perform at 7:20 pm on the main stage at the festival on Friday, May 13 th.  On Saturday, May 14 th, the festival will open at noon and will offer live music, the BBQ cook-off, a kid’s activity tent, and a beer garden. There will be a "Golden Ticket” for sale online ( will get you into the Competitive Barbecue Judges Tasting tent on Saturday, a vote in the People's Choice Award, and a gold ticket for the Bayhawks home opener. 

“Parole Rotary Club is pleased to partner with the Major League Lacrosse Champion Chesapeake Bayhawks for the Naptown barBAYq contest and festival, May 13 and 14, 2011,” Rotary representative Bill Fine stated.  “This two day festival is a Kansas City Barbecue Society Sanctioned contest and festival that will be held at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and promises to be great fun for the whole family.  48 barbecue teams from the Mid-Atlantic will compete, and there will be other food & arts & crafts vendors as well as music throughout the event, culminating with the home opener for the Bayhawks.”

The Bayhawks and the Parole Rotary Club view the home opener and the festival as a great opportunity to raise money for the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The family-friendly atmosphere of the event and the Bayhawks Home Opener Saturday, May 14 th versus the Rochester Rattlers will be a great annual event for the Chesapeake region. 

"We are very grateful to the Chesapeake Bayhawks and the Parole Rotary Club for partnering with us to raise much-needed funds for pediatric cancer research,” said Donald Small, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Pediatric Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. “It's because of dedicated organizations like the Bayhawks and the Rotary Club that we are able to speed the pace of research advances. Johns Hopkins is probably as strong in lacrosse as it is in medicine, so I am looking forward to watching as several of our Johns Hopkins alumni take the field as Bayhawks on May 14 th."

The Bayhawks have been intensely involved with John Hopkins pediatric oncology this year. Not only have they offered the fundraising program, but former Blue Jay and current Bayhawk star midfielder Mike Kimmel has visited with the Kimmel Cancer Center and filmed a promotional video with Dr. Small and one of their recovering patients. “Being from Baltimore, I remember like it was yesterday looking up to older lacrosse players in this area,” Kimmel stated. “I am so happy to be able to give back to these kids who inspire me and remind us all to count our blessings every day.”

The 2011 season opener is Saturday, May 14 th against the Rochester Rattlers at 7:00 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.  Not only will John’s Hopkins Pediatric Oncology will be honored during the game, but other festivities for the day include fireworks, raffles, and the Bud Light Pre-Game Tailgate with beer specials and more. In addition, the Bayhawks and the Greene Turtle will giveaway co-branded rally towels at the home opener to commemorate the 2010 Championship title.
