The Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) further strengthened their defense with league veteran John Orsen (Hofstra ’06) as their first pick in the 2012 MLL Supplemental Draft. The Bayhawks acquired a total of 18 players during the draft which was conducted by the MLL general managers and coaches via conference call. Chesapeake had a total of 17 picks in the Expansion Draft and brought their roster to 35 players afterwards with an additional pull from the Player Pool.

Orsen, a Hofstra graduate, was drafted by Long Island in the 2006 MLL Collegiate Draft in the 4 th round, 40 th overall. He played 35 games for the Lizards from 2006-2008 and then again in 2010 tallying 139 ground balls and 15 points with 12 goals, 2 two-point goals, and 1 assist. A member of the 2011 USA Team for the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Prague, Orsen currently serves as the assistant lacrosse coach at Marquette University.

"I am really excited to be selected by the Bayhawks in the Supplemental Draft,” Orsen said. ”The Chesapeake organization is committed to winning and I hope I can add to that.  I look forward to meeting my new teammates and getting out on the field."

As a result of a trade, Chesapeake did not have a 2 nd round pick. In the 3 rd round, the Bayhawks selected rookie midfielder Kevin Kaminski (Delaware ‘11)with their 21 st overall pick. Kaminski was drafted by Boston in the 4 th round, 22 nd overall in the 2011 MLL Collegiate Draft but did not see any playing action. While at Delaware, Kaminski was a three-time All-Colonial Athletic Conference selection.

In the 4 th round, the Bayhawks selected defenseman Bill Henderson (Army ’11) with the 29 th overall pick. Henderson was drafted 37 th overall by the Hamilton Nationals in the 2011 Collegiate Draft. A two-time Army team captain and 2011 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Henderson played 3 games for the Nationals and collected 4 ground balls.

Chesapeake drafted rookie midfielder Chris Hunt (University of North Carolina ’11) with their 5 th round pick, 37 th overall. Brother of Bayhawks’ midfielder Ben Hunt, Chris was selected to the All-ACC Academic Men's Lacrosse Team all four years at UNC.

“We were able to get a lot of quality players and team- first guys in this draft,” general manager Brian Reese stated. “We are excited about the potential that our supplemental draft picks will bring to the team’s chemistry. I think we selected a good mix of rookies to bring new energy and motivation and veterans to help bring depth. We addressed all of our needs and will have some fierce competition at every position come training camp.”

The Bayhawks brought back two veterans in the 6 th and 7 th rounds. Attackman Brendan Cannon (Georgetown ’08) was the 45 th overall pick and played for the Bayhawks in 2011. Over his career with the MLL, Cannon has tallied 29 points with 14 goals, 1 two-point goal, and 14 assists. His season ended abruptly in 2011 at Hamilton in May when he left the game due to an arm injury. Goalie Joey Kemp (Notre Dame ’08) was selected with the 53 rd overall pick. Kemp played for the Los Angeles Riptide in 2008 and the Bayhawks in 2009 and 2011, including an overtime win at Denver last season where he made 13 saves.

To further enhance the roster, the Bayhawks added midfielders Scott LaRue (University of Maryland ’11), Al Kohart (University of Pennsylvania ’11), Walter Flaherty (Yale ’11), Brian Clayton (Cornell ’07), and Albert Maione (Malloy College ’10) with the 61 st, 69 th, 93 rd, 109 th, and 141 st overall picks respectively.  Clayton was drafted to the Rochester Rattlers with the 23 rd pick overall in the 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft and Maione was selected in the 7th round of the 2010 MLL Collegiate Draft by Long Island.

Chesapeake focused on their attack line with their 10 th and 17 th round picks. Rookies Trevor Moore (Robert Morris ’11) and Neal Hicks (Notre Dame ’10) were selected with the 77 th and 133 rd overall picks.

Defensemen Tim Kaiser (University of North Carolina ’08) and Michael Simon (Stevenson ’09) were added to the Bayhawks’ roster with the 85 th overall pick in the 11 th round and the 101 st pick in the 13 th round respectively. Kaiser will be an MLL rookie in 2012. Simon enhanced the Bayhawks practice squad in 2010 and 2011, and he played one game for the team in 2010 where he recorded 3 ground balls.

The Bayhawks drafted another veteran to add depth to the face-off squad with their 15 th round pick. Face-off specialist Pat Muston (UMBC ’04) was added back to the roster with the 117 th overall pick. Muston was selected from MLL Player Pool in December 2010 by Chesapeake. Muston also played one game for the Bayhawks during the 2007 season.

Chesapeake selected rookie goalie Anthony DiBartolo III (Mount St. Mary’s ’11) in the 16 th round with the 125 th overall pick. To complete the 35-man roster, the Bayhawks added rookie attackman Zack Howell (Duke ’11) from the player pool.
