The Chesapeake Bayhawks announced today that their star face-off specialist Alex Smith successfully underwent Tommy John surgery after weeks of painful play in the 2011 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) season. The surgery replaced Smith’s torn ligaments with a tendon in his forearm and is very common among professional and collegiate athletes.

Smith tore the collateral ligaments and the tendon in his elbow during the June 11 th game vs. the Denver Outlaws. Despite being warned by his doctor that continuing to play may lead to permanent damage, the veteran face-off specialist fought through the pain to help the Bayhawks secure a playoff berth.

“Every face-off was painful’” Smith stated. “I had severe numbness in my fingers and hand after the games and the pain was unbearable. Even through all that, I knew I had to play and I wanted to play for my teammates.”

Smith will wear a brace for up to 6 weeks and endure 6-7 months of recovery through rehabilitation. Through all of this, Smith is optimistic about his ability to get back on the field in 2012. “I feel better – I have little to no pain and my range of motion is coming back. I’ll be ready to play this summer.”
